Cambridge Blue retained their title for the 4th successive year at the Top Gun 2019 event held at Farmoor 9/10 February 2019, defeating Exeter 2-1 in the final. Strong winds prevented sailing on the Saturday, but tight and effective Oxford organisation enabled every one of the eight teams entered to sail 14 races in the often very brisk conditions on Sunday.

Cambridge Blue and Exeter were clearly the teams to watch, losing just one race each in the round robin (Exeter to Cambridge and Cambridge to Exeter!). Exeter stormed away to 1, 2, 3 on the first beat of the 3-race final, to win comfortably. Cambridge responded strongly in the second race to also win convincingly.
The last race of the final was possibly the best team race of this season’s circuit, with Exeter holding the advantage at the start of the final beat. But Cambridge refused to give up, sailed fast, and pounced on any Exeter slip-ups – to move into a winning combination and so retain their title.
A big thank you to the Umpires for their good work, to Oxford SC for their continuing support, and to Oxford (organiser Inés Pont Sanchis) for arranging such an excellent event. The OUYC annual dinner on the Saturday night was as enjoyable as ever.
