And so, another Varsity began…
Day 1 was training day. With light winds and tidal sailing to contend with, several sailors quickly discovered that finding the pontoon again was not as straightforward as expected.
Day 2 brought close racing and even closer chaos. The Open races were split between the Blues, with Charlie producing the gybe-back of the year and allowing two Light Blue boats to sail straight through. In the Women’s racing, Oxford took the first race, but Cambridge came back fighting in the second, with Esme’s speed taking the win.
The day then moved swiftly into the University Crabbing Championships, where Cambridge’s Crabtain Emma used her extensive experience to secure victory.
Day 3 promised stronger winds. It delivered FAR stronger winds. Both teams stared wistfully at the river, hoping the breeze would drop, while slowly burning in the process. Eventually, sailing was cancelled, and burgers, netball and more crabbing took centre stage.
With the last race deciding the winner in the event of a tie, Cambridge took the trophy in both the Women’s and Open events.
