Cuppers 2025

The annual Cuppers inter-college sailing event was competed for in May week. After two years of pitiful drifting, the forecast of 17-27 knots brought a bit of a shock to the system. The safety of the event was navigated by splitting the teams into two flights, with an experienced Gold fleet attempting to team race and a less experienced Silver fleet focusing on having fun on the water. With strong winds came difficulty in running valid races, with the head of results Charlie invalidating a number of results which saw blatant breaking of the rules. This eventually handed the win to Selwyn by default who had the most number of valid wins (one), and everyone wished more racing could have happened in better conditions. The afternoon then focused on taking the less experienced sailors out in joyrides. Getting a Firefly on a plane was a fun experience for all, and many smiles were made. Fingers crossed next year’s Cuppers returns to a more docile forecast. Many thanks to Sam Dernie for organising.
