The Cambridge University Cruising Club (CUCrC) is the home of every sort of small craft sailing at the University – dinghies, boards, foils, and small keel boats.
A mixed Cambridge team (Beige & Purple) sailed steadily to finish 10th out of 20 entrants in the Exeter Excalibur 2019 held at Roadford Lake, Launceston on 9/10th March 2019. It was a wild and windy weekend, with gales preventing any sailing on the Sunday. Cardiff Black were the overall winners – with Beige winning 5 of the 8 races they sailed.

Callum Farnden and Hugh Tomkins

Saturday provided perfect conditions for team racing, and the organisers worked the 4 flights of Fireflies hard. As a result, most of the 21 teams competing sailed 10 races. Suitably exercised, sailors headed off to the excellent dinner in the Royal Cambridge Hotel. After that they whopped it up at the Cindies night club into the early hours.
Sunday dawned windless and stayed that way for most of the day. No racing was possible so overall placings were decided on the results of Saturday’s round robin. With team changeovers not happening on Sunday, some team photographs are missing. Full results of the event will be available on the kSail website for a time.
A big thank you to the Race Committee and Umpires who ran the event so efficiently, to Grafham Water SC for their continuing support, and to the army of Cambridge students who kept things going behind the scenes.

Cambridge Beige gathered experience at the Imperial Icicle 2019 held at the Welsh Harp 16/17 February 2019. Excellent team racing conditions and slick Imperial organisation provided great racing for the 15 teams competing. Beige finished 4th in the Bronze league.

Cambridge Blue retained their title for the 4th successive year at the Top Gun 2019 event held at Farmoor 9/10 February 2019, defeating Exeter 2-1 in the final. Strong winds prevented sailing on the Saturday, but tight and effective Oxford organisation enabled every one of the eight teams entered to sail 14 races in the often very brisk conditions on Sunday.

Cambridge Blue and Exeter were clearly the teams to watch, losing just one race each in the round robin (Exeter to Cambridge and Cambridge to Exeter!). Exeter stormed away to 1, 2, 3 on the first beat of the 3-race final, to win comfortably. Cambridge responded strongly in the second race to also win convincingly.
The last race of the final was possibly the best team race of this season’s circuit, with Exeter holding the advantage at the start of the final beat. But Cambridge refused to give up, sailed fast, and pounced on any Exeter slip-ups – to move into a winning combination and so retain their title.
A big thank you to the Umpires for their good work, to Oxford SC for their continuing support, and to Oxford (organiser Inés Pont Sanchis) for arranging such an excellent event. The OUYC annual dinner on the Saturday night was as enjoyable as ever.

The BUSA Qualifiers 2019, organised by Warwick University at Grafham Water, were a complete success. Windy and cold conditions on the Saturday resulted in some breakages and quite a few spills. Conditions were ideal on the Sunday with sunshine and a gentle breeze. With three flights in use, each of the 18 teams completed at least 14 races over the weekend.

Cambridge were well represented in the BUSA Qualifiers 2019 event management: Event Director was Karen Thomas (Lucy Cavendish 2017); Principal Race Officer Tim Palmer (St Catharines 2011); and Chief Umpire Chris Atkins (Pembroke 1974). In addition, a good many current Cambridge students assisted the organisers.

Cambridge was represented by a team of four at the recent SWA event Up The Brum organised by Birmingham at Chasewater 26/27 January 2019. No medals were run, but the team had a great weekend.
Four Cambridge teams were in action at events during 26/27 January 2019, Blue and Black teams at the 2019 Wessex Warmer (Spinnaker SC, Ringwood) and Purple and Beige teams at the 2019 Warwick Turtle (Draycote Water).
At the Turtle, six round were completed on Saturday, but there was no further racing on the Sunday, leaving Cambridge Purple winners on points, ahead of two teams from rivals Imperial College. Congratulations to Purple!
Francis from Cambridge Beige comments on the 2019 Warwick Turtle:
Overall the day went as well as I could have hoped (aside from some embarrassing capsizes!). As you would expect, given we are a new team, half of our races were lost 4,5,6 to better teams (mostly at the start). But the other half of our races were competitive, and we did a fair amount of Team Racing! In our most exiting race (thanks to some incredible 2 boat mark traps by Niels) we managed to slow the race down down to almost rescue a very large 5,6 gap. By the final beat we were in a close 2,3,6 but unfortunately could not make the final conversion happen. We are looking forward to watching some more experienced teams as we help out at Qualifiers and the Cam Cup before our next event – the Imperial Icicle.
At the Warmer, plenty of races were sailed, in a two-stage format. Cambridge Blue made the Gold Fleet, but lost two nail-biting races on the Sunday. They finished 6th overall, winning 8/14 races, just behind arch-rivals Exeter on a tie-break. Cambridge Black made the Silver Fleet after 6 wins on Saturday, going on to win both their races on Sunday.
Cambridge Captain Paris Thomas comments on the 2019 Wessex Warmer:
It was a pretty windy event with very very gusty, shifty conditions. We got in 12 races per team on the Saturday, which was very impressive race organisation. Unfortunately Sunday was a bit too windy and so the group stages were abandoned early on and the event went straight to semi finals. Black won 8 of their 14 races and learned a lot about team racing in gusty, shifty conditions – good preparation for Qualifiers next weekend!
Cambridge Purple, winners of the 2019 Warwick Turtle: Lucy Gates, Freddie Scott (Capt), Greg Sale, Holly MacAskill, Callum Farnden, Hugh Tomkins.
Cambridge Blue, 6th overall at the Wessex Warmer 2019: Robbie King, Jules Welham, Jamie Webb, Michael Smith, Bethan Matthew, Alex Smallwood.
Cambridge Black, 10th overall at the Wessex Warmer 2019: Alex Baxter, Ollie Jagger, Paris Thomas (Capt), Nina Luckman, Laragh Harvey-Kelly, Henry Morley.
Cambridge Beige bend to the wind at the Warwick Turtle 2019: Sam Martin, Francis Pollock, Ed Keen, Niels van Fraasen, Molly Deshorgher, and Bella Biddle.
