Cambridge Sailing and Board Sports of All Kinds
The Cambridge University Cruising Club (CUCrC) is the home of every sort of small craft sailing at the University – dinghies, boards, foils, and small keel boats.
Cambridge Beige had a good outing to the 2020 Imperial Icicle held at the Welsh Harp 15/16 February 2020. Detailed results are not available.
Cambridge teams finished 5th (Red), 14th (Beige), and 17th (Pink) at the 2020 Nottingham Snakebite held at Notts County SC on 8/9 Feb 2020. Racing was cancelled on the Sunday as storm Ciara duly arrived, and Exeter Black was declared the winner on the round robin results.
With a full entry of 24 teams, even though 96 races were sailed on the Saturday, a good many tie breaks were necessary to decide the final results. Full details will be available for a time on the kSail website.
This was a very satisfactory showing by Cambridge, being their first outing with changed team arrangements.
Cambridge were 2nd at the 2020 Oxford Top Gun, held at Farmoor on 8 Feb 2020, from a select entry of 8 universities. They lost out in a tie break with winners Southampton. Exeter finished 3rd and Oxford were 4th. A full report with photographs is on the O&CSS website.
Congratulations to Blue on such a good result! It was their first outing with new team arrangements, so some ‘settling-in’ took place.

All three Cambridge teams qualified for BUSA Finals from a field of 15 teams at the 2020 Qualifiers event held at Grafham Water SC on 1/2 February 2020. Loughborough Purple also qualified in 4th place, with Warwick Black, Nottingham Green, and University of East Anglia Yellow having a second chance to qualify at the playoffs. BUSA Finals will be at Grafham just after Easter (13-15 April).
High winds caused the abandonment of Saturday racing. Just 11 races were sailed before winds started gusting over 30 knots. Better weather on Sunday and an early (8:57am!) first race start enabled a full programme to be sailed. A big thank-you to Karen Thomas, Bryan Ormond and their team of helpers and umpires. They worked hard in the face of difficult conditions to make the event a real success. Many thanks also to Grafham Water SC for once again making all their facilities so generously available.
Congratulations to all our Cambridge sailors on a fantastic performance in these 2020 Qualifiers!

Congratulations to Cambridge on taking the Bronze Medal at the 2020 Winter Warmer held 25/26 January at Spinnaker SC. They were first university – ahead of consistent foes Exeter. Birdham Bandits ran out winners, with O&CSS runners-up. Detailed results will be available for a time on the kSail website.
Our corespondent Olivia Jacklin reports:
Cambridge Blue were in action at the Wessex 2020 Winter Warmer. In true Spinnaker style, conditions on Saturday were fairly light and shifty. Nonetheless, Cambridge put out a strong performance in the round robin – sailing an impressive 12 races and winning all but one (losing to Oxford Blue which can said to be a ‘banana skin’ mistake!). This meant that the team was leading the event overnight.
Cambridge returned to Spinnaker on Sunday were conditions were pretty gusty and shifty. The teams were split into leagues with Cambridge Blue sailing 6 races in the gold league. The impressive set of teams meant that racing was competitive and to the highest quality. Cambridge fought hard to earn a place in the semi-final against OCSS, which was lost 0-2. Cambridge then sailed in the Petit Final against Exeter. Here Cambridge took the first race, but Exeter struck back to take the second. Despite this temporary setback, Cambridge hung on to win the playoff 2-1, so finishing in a very respectable overall 3rd place.
This well-run event with plenty of good teams provided useful practice for the upcoming Qualifiers and other events later on in the term. A big thank you to the Umpires for their hard work and to Southampton University for arranging such an excellent event.

CUCrC were to host the BUSA 2020 Team Racing Finals on 13-15 April 2020 at Grafham Water SC, near Cambridge. Alas COVID-9 put paid to the event. The 28 best university teams would have competed at BUSA 2020, the highlight of the student dinghy team racing season.
Cambridge last hosted the BUSA event in 2016 and 2006.
If you would like to volunteer at the event, or if you have any questions, please email us using this link: busa.cucrc@gmail.com
The 2019 Loughborough Lemming, held at Burton Sailing Club 30 Nov / 1 Dec, began relatively slowly for Cambridge Green. The first day of sailing was canned due to thick fog, and illness meant that only five members of the team could attend.
On the Sunday we redeemed ourselves! Danny O’Toole, helming at his first ever team racing event, sailed with crew Megan Redhead. Sam Martin helmed very well with a casual sailor from Loughborough. Ollie Dennis and Bella Biddle were able to get some good experience at the pin, winning several starts over the course of the weekend.
Together the team were able to pull off some impressive conversions against strong competition, demonstrating the team racing skills they had picked up in training. Overall we finished the 2019 Loughborough Lemming in 11th of 20 teams ranked by points.
Cambridge White trekked down to Bristol for the 2019 Bristol Brew on 30th Nov / 1st Dec. On arrival at Chew Valley Lake, the wind appeared gusty and shifty. The challenging conditions were different from much of the team’s training so far this year. The team ended Saturday with 5 wins from 8 races. This was enough to qualify as the highest team in the Silver League.
In much lighter conditions on the Sunday, White won 4 of their 5 races. This meant they were the “silver surfer”, but unfortunately lost the 4 vs. Silver Winner race to Exeter Blue. Cindies Sailing Club, a team consisting of 5 recent Cambridge alumni won the 2019 Bristol Brew final 2-0.
Cambridge White: Callum Farnden & Annabel Hitchmough (non-Cambridge); Juliette Kennedy & Hugh Tomkins; Holly MacAskill & Freddie Scott
Event winners Cindies Sailing Club: Alumni Greg Sale, Cat Wallace, Anna Prescott, George Hopes and Josh Adams
The Club’s traditionally brief AGM was held in record time at the Hawk’s Club, Cambridge on Tuesday 3rd December 2019, presided over by Commodore Freddie Scott. The AGM was followed by the as-always very popular Team Racing Dinner – see the photographs below.
