Cambridge on the Learning Curve at UKTRA – March 2022

Cambridge were on a learning curve at 2022 UKTRA (now RYA Team Racing Nationals) held at West Kirby 26/27 March 2022. Cambridge Blue finished 13th and Orange finished 18th. West Kirby Hawks were the winners with Royal Thames Blue runners-up and Society Exodus 3rd.

Exeter was the leading University, in 4th place, and they later confirmed their dominance by winning the BUSA team racing finals at Chew Valley Lake SC. Cambridge captain Ewan Gribbin commented:

We were sailing well on the course, but our starting left something to be desired.

Jeremy Buckwell & Bruce Burnett – March 2022

It is with great regret that we record the deaths of Jeremy Buckwell (Trinity Hall 1954) some time ago, and Bruce Burnett (Corpus Christi 1975) very recently – in February 2022.

Both were keen sailors: Jeremy sailed against Oxford in 1956 (won) and 1957 (lost); Bruce sailed in 1977 (won) and captained the team in 1978 (won). Both were also generous supporters of the Club in recent years. Bruce was elected a member of the Oxford & Cambridge Sailing Society in 1979.

Rutland Take 2022 Cam Cup – February 2022

Rutland were victorious in the 2022 Cam Cup at Grafham Water on 26/27 February 2022, beating Southampton Green 2-1 in the final. Royal Thames Blue beat Sheffield 2-0 in the petit final to take Bronze. Cambridge finished in the Bronze league. Full results of the event will be available for a time on the kSail website.

With the BUSA Team Racing finals not so far away, the university results will be studied very carefully. Southampton dislodged Exeter from their previous top-dog position. Will the same thing happen at Chew Valley 18-20th April? Cardiff and Sheffield showed that they are forces to be reckoned with. Cambridge performed well below their best, so they should certainly be able to improve.

Conditions were near-perfect over the weekend for the 2022 Cam Cup and faultless organisation meant that every team sailed at least 15 races. The usual black tie dinner and night club excursion were as enjoyable as ever. Congratulations to Gordon Sivarajan and Will Adler for their organisation of the event and dinner, and to Jo Sammons for her quiet but very effective running of the racing.

A big thank you to all the helpers, umpires, and organisations that provided boats – and to Grafham Water SC for making their superb facilities available for the event.

Cambridge Triumph at 2022 Women’s BUSA – February 2022

Cambridge Women retained their Universities’ Team Racing crown at the 2022 Women’s BUSA Championships held on 19/20 February 2022 at Budworth SC. They also collected Silver in the concurrent National Championships – finishing 2nd to Rutland Raiders.

It was a windy weekend and some teams dropped out because of the weather forecast. Budworth handled the conditions well so that every team got some racing. Detailed results will be available for a time on kSail. Congratulations to Cambridge Women on a great performance!

Cambridge Beige at the 2022 Imperial Icicle – February 2022

Captain Paul McMeekin reports on the 2022 Imperial Icicle:

Cambridge Beige headed to Wembley on the 12th/13th February for the 2022 Imperial Icicle. This was the first team racing event for the majority of the team. Our main aim was to get some good racing in the breezy conditions. Over the weekend, Imperial managed to run around 130 races. As an additional challenge we didn’t have a full team and had to rely on substitutes in different races. After an enjoyable two days racing Beige finished in Bronze league. A massive thank you to the Imperial sailors for putting on a great event!

Exeter Take Windy 2022 Top Gun – February 2022

Exeter continued their dominance of university team racing with a 2-0 victory over Bristol in the final of the Oxford Top Gun held on 12/13 February 2022 at Farmoor. Newcomers Newcastle captured the Bronze on the basis of their round robin results. Full results are listed below the photo gallery.

Strong winds provided exciting sailing for the 8 teams competing- as well as a certain amount of capsize practice. Good organisation meant that each team sailed at least 16 races over the weekend, with most sailing 17 races. Seamanship rather than clever team racing was the order of the day.

A big thanks you to Ollie Neville, plus all his helpers and umpires who made a first-class event possible – and to Oxford SC for making their excellent facilities available.

Cambridge Shine at 2022 Qualifiers – February 2022

UAE (East Anglia) plus Cambridge Blue and Pink qualified for BUSA Finals (18-20 April, Chew Valley) at the 2022 Qualifiers held at Grafham SC on 5/6 February 2022. Imperial Blue, London White, and Cambridge Orange will have a second chance to qualify at the Playoffs (5/6 March, Derwent). Full results will be available for a time on kSail.

The extreme conditions forecast for the Saturday did not materialise and good racing was experienced by the 11 student teams contesting the 2022 Qualifiers. The weather was not so cooperative on the Sunday and no racing was possible. However, enough races were sailed on the Saturday for the event to count.

A big thank you to Cambridge organisers Olivia Jacklin, PRO Ollie Jagger, and RO Jamie Webb who, along a volunteer helper from each competing team, some additional Cambridge assistance, and the ever-faithful band of umpires, ran a very successful event. Also, thank you to Grafham Water SC for once again making their excellent facilities available for Qualifiers.

Cambridge on Learning Curve at 2022 Winter Warmer – January 2022

Cambridge Pink finished 10th (3rd university) and Cambridge Blue 14th (7th university) in an excellent 2022 Winter Warmer held at Spinnaker SC 29/30 January 2022. A more detailed report and team photographs are on the O&CSS website.

Exeter, the only university to make the semi finals, showed that this year they are yet again the team to beat. University College Dublin, the only other university to make the top 8 in the round robin stage, also showed their class.

Cambridge alumni sailors made up most of the winning Oxford & Cambridge SS team, and were well represented on Bronze Medallists Cindies SC, on Cambermet Cardinals, and on Royal Thames (100%!).

Cambridge at 2021 Bristol Brew – December 2021

Over the weekend of 4-5th December 2021, unavailability of normal team members meant a slightly different looking Cambridge Blue Team made the trip to the Bristol Brew. Despite cold and windy conditions at Chew Valley Lake, there was sailing on both days. After the round robin Cambridge qualified for the quarter finals but unfortunately then lost the sudden death quarter final to Exeter Blue.It was a really useful weekend, lots of learning and a good way to end the term! The next thing for the team is preseason training at the start of January before lots of events in the Lent term.

The Cambridge 2021 Bristol Brew team was:
Ewan Gribbin/Liv Jacklin
Adam Rathmell/Ollie Jagger
Juliette Kennedy/Freddie Scott
