Robbie King takes Bronze at 2020 UK Match Racing Finals – November 2020

Strong winds curtailed racing on the first day of the 2020 UK Match Racing Finals held at Queen Mary SC 30 Oct / 01 Nov 2020, with Sunday’s knock-our rounds being cancelled. In addition, spinnakers were not allowed on the Sunday, making starts even more crucial. Andy Cornah ran out a clear winner with tie-breaks deciding the next 4 places.

Congratulations to member Robbie King and his mainly-Cambridge team on taking the Bronze Medal in a very tough competition. Also to Dave Robertson who crewed for 6th-placed Murray Hampshire. Detailed results will be available for a while on the Match Racing Results Service.

First Day of 2020 University Trials – October 2020

A strong breeze provided good racing at the first day of the 2020 University Trials held at Grafham Water on Saturday 10 Oct 2020, but necessitated a switch to cutdown mains after an hour or so of racing.

The trials took place under the watchful eye of Olivia Jacklin (Capt) and Ollie Jagger. Numbers were restricted to 7 boats because of transport and social distancing considerations. The trials have therefore been spread over two weekends this year.

There is quite an array of talent participating in the trials, which augurs well for the future. The big question, however, is how much external competition will be possible this term in view of increasingly strict COVID-19 restrictions.

All Cambridge at 2020 RYA Youth Match Racing – September 2020

Robbie King (Emmanuel, outgoing Cambridge sailing captain and a Blue) defeated Alex Smallwood (Sidney Sussex and a Blue) 3-1 in the final of the 2020 RYA Youth Match Racing Championships held at the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy 4-6 Sep 2020.

In the first day round robin, 8 teams competing, Robbie came 2nd with 5 wins and Alex came 4th with 4 wins. The second day had lighter winds which favoured both Alex and Robbie with their lighter crew weights. By winning the event Robbie has qualified for the Match Racing Grand Finals to be held 30 Oct-1 Nov at Queen Mary SC.

After two rather dull (3-0) semi-finals, the first three races of the final provided excellent spectator excitement with constant manoeuvring and frequent place changes. Robbie took the first race, Alex struck back in the second, and Robbie took the third. Robbie then hung on to his advantage to win the fourth race convincingly, and so finish a worthy 3-1 victor overall.

Wessex Exiles Take 2020 Boysterous Cup – March 2020

Wessex Exiles ran out winners of the 2020 Boysterous Cup held at Royal Southern YC 14/15 March 2020. The two universities in the 6-strong entry, Cambridge and Portsmouth, had to be content with the bottom two places – with Portsmouth finishing just ahead of the Cambridge Pink crew.

There was good sailing on the Saturday, with each crew getting at least 11 races before the AP over A went up to end racing for the day in the face of a rising wind. Racing was cancelled on the Sunday because of gales.
