Cambridge Alumni at 2019 J70 Worlds – September 2019

An all-Cambridge team competed at the Darwin Escapes 2019 J70 Worlds held in September on the waters of Torbay in Devon. Skipper Fiona Hampshire reports:

I pulled together an all-Cambridge crew spanning multiple generations for the 2019 J70 Worlds. Lilly Carlisle (Newnham), Hugo Sloper (Selwyn), Tim Gratton (Catz), Josh Flack (Emma) and myself (Catz) were braced for a big week of tough racing – and the event did not disappoint. With nearly 80 boats on a dual start line it was a challenge just to get onto the opening beat. We gradually improved throughout the week and I’m particularly proud of our penultimate day when we quickly got the hang of the shifty conditions and recovered from some bad starts to post three results in the twenties. Overall it was a world-class event with no shortage of sailing rock stars. We are honoured to have been part of it.

The event was dominated by professional crews, Fiona and team finished 40th out of 77 overall and 11th out of 36 in the Corinthian (amateur) event.
