Cambridge Blue retained their title at an excellent Oxford Top Gun 2018 event held at Farmoor on 10/11 February. They beat Southampton 2-1 in a very closely-fought final. So Blue have achieved the hat-trick of three consecutive victories – congratulations to all the team!
Good winds, good organisation, and the usual restricted entry of just 8 teams meant that everyone had a great weekend of racing. They also enjoyed the OUYC annual dinner on the Saturday night. By Sunday midday it was clear that there were two leading teams. So the event moved to a best-of-three final immediately after the lunch break.
Finals
Each race of the Oxford Top Gun 2018 final was a superb exposition of team racing at its best. The result was in doubt until the finish line in every case. Southampton took the first race, with neither team knowing who had won. Cheered on by two sets of parents(!) and your ever-faithful reporter, Cambridge took the second. So everything hung on the final race. A forced error by Southampton required them to do spins after the start. Cambridge took full advantage of this gift to win the race and the Top Gun Trophy.
