Sir Peter Scott Painting of Sailing Dinghies

This page displays a photograph of the Sir Peter Scott painting of sailing dinghies: ‘Dinghies Racing on Lake Ontario’. The Cambridge University Cruising Club Annual Report of the time records Peter's (wiki link) gift of the 80x50cm painting in the Club’s year of 1935/36. The story behind the scene depicted – one of the few ‘non-wildlife’ paintings that Peter produced in his career – is as follows.

Open Varsity Teams

This page records the full list of Cambridge sailing varsity teams from the inception of the Oxford-Cambridge match in 1912 until the current day. The first encounter in 1912 was the best of three match races, but the name of the helmsman in each race, crewed by one of the other helms, is recorded here for convenience. The captain of the team for that first match was the later-to-be famous and knighted Sir Geoffrey Taylor – Wikipedia who invented the CQR anchor and was president of the Club 1946-60. With the exception of the years 1984 and 1990, the team was men only until an open format (i.e. both men and women) was agreed in 2000.

Womens Varsity Teams

This page contains a partial list of Cambridge womens varsity sailing teams from the inception of the Oxford-Cambridge womens match in 1958 to the current day. We have used best endeavours from participants’ memories and research in the Club’s archives to construct teams for the years of 1958 to 2011. Since 2012 the Club has made an annual deposit of full team details and season’s results (the Commodore’s Report) in the archives of the Club at the University Library. The current Commodore’s Report is also available online.

Team Captains

This page lists elected or appointed Cambridge team racing captains since 1912. Normally, but not always, this is the person who captained the Varsity Team of that year. However, the captains of the pre-World War I Varsity Matches remain in some doubt and there was no Junior Head of the Club until 1921/22.

BUSA Results

This page lists Cambridge results in the BUSA Team Racing Championships, now also a BUCS event. The event was first sailed in 1957 and has taken place every year since then. The Womens event started later and has not taken place in every year. Cambridge stopped competing in the Womens Championships for a while because they were held at the same time, and in the same place, as the main championship. That resulted in women sailing on the main team being unable to compete in the womens event. This changed in 2012 when the Womens BUSA Team Racing was first run as part of the RYA Womens National Team Racing Championships

Cuppers Winners

This page lists Cambridge team racing Cuppers winners. Cuppers is an annual inter-college competition held in a great many Oxford and Cambridge sports. The first Cuppers team racing competition was held in 1924, in the academic year of 1923-24. The Yule Oldham Cup for the event dates from that time. Since 2016 the Royal Harwich YC 1948 Swordfish Tankard has been awarded to the best Silver Fleet team. All the years listed below are calendar years. A ‘+’ between two college names indicates that this was a combined team.

Cam Cup Winners

This page lists Cambridge Cam Cup team racing winners from the first event in 1999 until the present time. The Cam Cup is a team racing event held each year in late February or early March (the cup is engraved as: ‘The Cambridge Cup’). Entry is by invitation only, to the best alumni and university teams in the country.

Varsity Teams

This page records the list of Cambridge windsurfing varsity teams from the inception of the Oxford-Cambridge match in 1982 until the current day. After the first three matches in 1982-84, the fixture did not become regular until 1990. Names of team members and college affiliations, plus the format of the match, are often missing in earlier years, but are recorded consistently from 2012. The Club has made an annual deposit of teams and season’s results (the Commodore’s Report) in the University archives since that year.

Team Captains

This page lists Cambridge windsurfing team captains since 1978. The team captain has been head of the Windsurfing Section since sections were set up in 1986. The title associated with the position has varied over the years. Since 2014/15 the official title has been Vice Commodore, previously it had been President. The informal title is Team Captain.
