A successful term
With some 60 members, the CU Cruising Club has had an active and successful term, culminating in the election of a new President, Mike Hayles (Churchill 1962) and a new Senior Committee Member, Michael John Gifford (Caius 1997). Earlier in the term we said a grateful good-bye to our retiring President Ian Liddell (St Johns 1957).
Around 65 freshers and others were given a taste of sailing and windsurfing in four sessions over the first weekend of term, and a good many trips have been organised for both windsurfers and sailors since then.
On the competitive front pride of place goes to Arthur Henderson (Robinson – Helm) and Tom Maxwell (Downing – Crew) on collecting the Bronze Medal at the BUCS/BUSA Fleet Championships on 5/6 November at Draycote Water, in the star-studded Firefly fleet of 66 boats.
Not to be outdone, the team racers have been keeping the Cambridge flag flying at weekend events this term. Cambridge Blue finished 5th and top university in a tough Oxford Magnum, while Black and Purple battled it out for 1st place at the Brummie Bender – with Black clinching Gold in an exciting one-race final.
The windsurfers made an expedition to the famed Aussie Kiss event in Devon and finished a creditable 11th in the team (relay race) event. Full reports of all events are available on this website – see ‘Recent News’ bar to the right.
The Club is actively seeking good on-going commercial sponsorship so that we can maintain the excellence of our current boats, boards, and gear – as well as sustaining our competitive activities. If there are any friends or business contacts of your family, or yourself personally, to whom you could introduce the Club, please get in touch. Sponsors are usually interested in recruitment, and this newsletter may include relevant sponsor publicity material in future when we have successfully negotiated a sponsorship deal.
Sharp-eyed alumni may have noticed some changes to our website. First, all our websites now have a better representation of Cambridge blue, courtesy of the Cambridge BlueBird sports website (opens in a new window). Second, we have implemented an Archives page on this website so that items published some time ago can be accessed easily. Third, we have added new History and Newsletter categories to better classify website content.
