Ian Liddell (St Johns 1957) will retire from being of President of the CUCrC at the forthcoming AGM, having filled the role for almost 9 years. After a recent brief illness, Ian continues to be in excellent health. He, along with his wife Suzie, said his farewells at the General Committee Meeting held on 3 November 2016, to many tokens of appreciation. A new President will be elected at the AGM on 28th November 2016.
Ian was elected President of the Club at the AGM held on 19 January 2008, at the suggestion of Pete Winslow (Trinity Hall 2005, Windsurfing Team Captain 2007/8) – who knew Ian because he was studying engineering. Ian took up sailing after his Cambridge days, in good time to enthuse his daughter Ari as a keen and competitive sailor. Ari (New Hall / Murray Edwards 1997, Ladies Captain 1999/2000) was the first lady to helm for the (winning) Cambridge Mixed Team – in 2001 on her home waters of Aldeburgh.
For the first few years of his Presidency Ian took a relaxed approach and was essentially a figurehead. However, in the autumn of 2011, the Club’s difficulties having been explained to him by fellow Aldeburgh sailor Mike Hayles (Churchill 1962), Ian became a very proactive President and steered the Club through the stormy waters of splitting off the Yachting Section to form a separate club, focusing on funding and building up the current Firefly and board fleets, and encouraging student members to play a full role in the effective and efficient running the Club.
The General Committee and all the Sections of the Club wish Ian and Susie a long and very pleasant ‘retirement from office’, and record here their debt of gratitude to them both for what they have done for the Club over the years.
