Cambridge Blue defeated an Oxford Blue team 3 – 2 in a thrilling five-race ding-dong final in the BUSA Team Racing Championships held at Notts County SC on 9 – 11 April 2015. The result hung in the balance all the way up the last beat of the deciding fifth race. With a final determined effort Cambridge Blue clinched a win on the line to retain their BUSA crown, which they won last year – congratulations!
Three Cambridge teams qualified for the BUSA finals, Southampton being the only other university to emulate this achievement. All three Cambridge teams made it to the final knock-out quarter finals stage of the event, with Blue and Yellow winning through to the semi finals. Yellow lost to Oxford Blue in their semi, and conceded victory to Loughborough in the petit final for Bronze medals (Loughborough having lost to Cambridge Blue in their semi).
Overall Cambridge Yellow finished 4th, Cambridge Pink 7th, and Oxford Green 10th. The Irish Champions (University College Cork) were 5th, Durham Purple 6th, and Southampton Red 8th. Congratulations to all the Cambridge sailors on a truly magnificent performance! No other university has come near to matching their achievement since the 1990s.
Notts County SC proved an excellent venue and the weather generally favoured the event, with good sunshine on all three days and only one period of light winds on the opening day. Congratulations to Nottingham on their excellent organisation and many thanks to all the helpers, Notts SC as well as university, and to the race team and umpires, who worked with a will to create a truly memorable event.
