Cambridge were Bronze Medallists from 22 teams at the BUSA Yachting Championships held in Sunsail F40s at Port Solent during 30 March – 2nd April 2015. Southampton were the winners, Oxford were 2nd, and Southampton Solent were 4th. Racing was extremely close in the top four positions, though Southampton was always the team to beat.
Racing was was cancelled on the Tuesday due to gales, with the loss of three races, and only one race could be completed in the light winds of the final series day of Thursday – when the fleet is split into Gold and Silver divisions, and all races sailed have to be counted. Oxford finished ahead in this ‘sudden death’ climax to take Silver from Cambridge by half a point – the half point resulting from redress earlier in the event.
The result was a bitter-sweet moment for Oxford, having previously conceded the Yachting Varsity Match to Cambridge. The outcome was in fact an ‘other way round’ replay of the 2012 result when Oxford won the Yachting Varsity, but Cambridge finished ahead in BUSA. Congratulations Cambridge on a great performance! It is rare for ‘inland’ universities to be in the first 6 places at BUSA Yachting.
