Cambridge finished 4th at the trials to select the UK team for the ISAF World Team Racing, held at Rutland SC on 17/18 January 2015. West Kirby Hawks won, Royal Forth Hoosiers were 2nd, and ‘Bristol’ were 3rd. This was a very encouraging result for Cambridge, given the level of the competition.
Needless to say, there were 10 very strong teams present vying for the honour of representing the UK in the Worlds at Rutland in July. A full round robin was held on Saturday in 10-15 knots winds. Cambridge won 5 out of 9 to be placed equal third (with three other teams), and these top 6 proceeded to a further round robin on the Sunday.
Sunday’s wind was lighter with the strength and direction varying, making it very challenging for both sailors and race management teams. The round robin was dominated by West Kirby Hawks, but the selectors decided that they needed some more racing, primarily to see who might be second. A further cut was made to leave 4 teams, Cambridge eventually losing out in a close third place play-off to a team composed largely of Bristol University students and alumni.
