Winter Newsletter & 125th Anniversary – January 2018

125th Anniversary Celebrations

The Club’s 125th Anniversary year is here! You should already have the red-letter day of Saturday 21 April in your diary. Now is the moment to follow up with a booking for the Random Pairs event during the day at Grafham, and for the Anniversary Dinner at Darwin College in the evening. It is also a good moment to book accommodation in your College for the Saturday night – term does not start until the following Tuesday.

Jo Lucas has very kindly volunteered to run the Random Pairs event and has set up a Facebook page to cover the event. Ian Walker MBE will be the speaker at the Anniversary Dinner. The cost of entering the Random Pairs event is £20 a pair. The cost of the dinner is £60 a head and partners are also welcome. Numbers are limited for both events, particularly for the Random Pairs.

Finally, the usual joint Spring Drinks Party with Oxford will be taking place at the O&C Club in Pall Mall at 6.30pm on Thursday 22 March 2018. The guest speaker will be Ian Walker MBE. If you cannot make the Anniversary Dinner, get to the drinks party!   Book online – the cost is £21 and partners are very welcome.

Winter News

Heartiest congratulations to Fiona Hampshire on becoming Amateur Sailor of the Year at the recent London Boat Show – taking over from Katie Nurton who won last year!

Sustained activity on the windsurfing front has resulted in a massive clear-out and reorganisation of the Girton Store. Visit our website news for the full story – and for lots of other news.

A new flight of Fireflies has been ordered from Rondar for delivery this year, and arrangements concluded to sell our older flight. So we are now in the virtuous cycle of changing boats when they are six years old. A big thank-you to all those alumni whose continuing generosity has made this possible.

We plan to make a 125th Anniversary Appeal, for dinghy tenders to replace the current Laser II hulks, which are used as start and finish boats for training and informal events, and for three hand-held radios. But this appeal will only go to alumni who are not currently supporting the Club in some way, or have not done so in the recent past,

Sponsorship for Sailors

Would your Company benefit from recruiting capable Cambridge students? Talk to your HR Manager about the possibility of CUCrC sponsorship giving your Company access to 40 keen team racers and around 1,000 interested sailing and windsurfing students at Cambridge. Our sponsorship charges vary between £2,000 and £9,000, depending on what a company wants. Sailing costs are over £1,000 a year for students on a team – the Club does not pay event entry fees.

Website Changes

We have continued to make progress in consolidating our various websites and making them mobile and tablet friendly. From six websites we are now down to two and we hope to get all functionality onto one website by the end of this year. You should notice little change but, if you have any comments on the new arrangements – particularly the navigation, please do get back to us.
