The weekend of 4/5th November 2017 saw great activity at Grafham Water as all four Cambridge teams trained – against a background of 150 boats contesting the Laser Inland Championships. They were joined on the Sunday by an Oppie Squad being trained by former CUCrC Commodore Bryan Ormond and CUCrC members on the second half of their Level 1 RYA Training course. Over 40 people had to be transported to Grafham and back to Cambridge.
No less than 12 students signed up for the RYA course, three times as many as last year, and training proceeded under the watchful eye of SI Karen Thomas, plus DI’s Ellie Pendlington and Sam Martin. Conditions were not ideal for beginners with Force 5/6 on the first day and 4/5 on the second Sunday. As a result it was not possible to award Level 1 certificates, but plans are afoot to complete the training later this term.
Next weekend (11/12th November) sees the first major competition of the season – the Oxford Magnum. Blue and Black will be there to show their mettle after all the training; Purple and Beige will be doing the same thing later – at the Brummie Bender (18/19 November).
